摘要

While many people talk about saving the environment, one Virginia college student is putting those words into action. Nick Turner, a mechanical engineering student at Old Dominion University, has developed a car that uses no gasoline and instead runs on a combination of pedal and battery power. Turner built the current version of his car earlier this year after a great deal of trial and error. The car features steel and aluminum tubing, a battery-powered motor, two lawn chairs, and a go-kart steering wheel, which he ordered online. The car can operate wholly on pedal power but achieves its maximum performance when pedaling is combined with power from the electric motor. The car is then capable of reaching speeds of 23 mph. Turner often drives his car down the back roads of his hometown, Leesburg, Virginia. As he cruises through the neighborhood, he attracts a great deal of attention from passersby, who inquire about such details as how the car operates and where they can get one. Turner intends to market the car but before then plans to make several improvements in its safety and handling.
