Cliding on cables high above New York City's East River, the Roosevelt Island Tram has been transporting passengers between Roosevelt Island and Manhattan since 1976. Designed as I a temporary system to enable commuters from ' Roosevelt Island's residential communities to connect with the city's subway system while a new subway stop was being completed on Roosevelt Island—a long-delayed link that did not open until 1989—the tramway instead became an iconic feature of the city's skyline and a popular tourist attraction. Riders enjoy spectacular views of the Queensboro Bridge and the Manhattan skyline as the two tramcars pass between Roosevelt Island's steel-framed station and the reinforced-con-crete structure in Manhattan, a distance of 3,140 ft. Three trussed towers hidden in the shadows of the bridge, one on Roosevelt Island and the other two in Manhattan, support the cable-suspended cars as they rise to a maximum height of 230 ft above grade. During its first 34 years in operation, the system carried as many as 2 million passengers annually, a figure expected to increase as new housing developments continue to open on Roosevelt Island.
