In 2008, Jason Steffen, I Ph.D., found himself standing in a long line of passengers attempting to board an airplane. As the passengers jostled around one another to get to their seats, Steffen, an astrophysicist, began to contemplate the way in which people were boarding the plane— the typical progression of moving forward from the rear of the plane. Convinced that this was not the most efficient way, Steffen created several computer simulations to determine a better approach. Several researchers had previously proposed seating passengers in window seats first, followed by middle seats and then aisle seats, an approach known as the Wil-ma method. But Steffen determined that a variant of that method would actually provide better results.
