Before railroads crisscrossed the nation, inland waterways were considered sacrosanct. They were the fastest means of trade and transportation in the nation and by the early 19th century were among the most effective means of transporting goods to such burgeoning settlements as St. Louis and Pittsburgh. It is little wonder that when roads and railroads expanded westward, some of these settlements vehemently opposed the construction of bridges over nearby rivers.
