At a time we as a nation have fewer scientists and engineers than we need, it is instructive to look back-via Paul Lucier's Scientists and Swindlers-to a time when any "man of science" in America had to work very hard indeed simply to find enough work to make a living. Between 1820 and 1890, science in America expanded from a cottage industry revolving almost exclusively around surveying into a force that helped drive the country into the modern era.
