The ongoing efforts to construct a memorial at the site of the World Trade Center and to redevelop the area are intended to both honor those who lost their lives there and to meet the future needs of New York City. However, construction crews excavating an area to be part of the memorial recently unearthed a vestige of the city's more distant past. In mid-July, a portion of an 18th-century ship was found at the site of a future parking facility, sparking a rapid effort to protect and preserve the unique archaeological artifact.
