A warning on the Web site of Maine's Magic Pond Wildlife Sanctuary reads as follow: "If you hit a moose and it falls through your windshield, you will be crushed." The sanctuary is located along U.S. Highway 1 in Maine, a roadway named 1 of the 10 most treacherous highways in the country. The state has an estimated 29,000 moose. Since the eyes of these animals do not reflect headlights, it is difficult for drivers to spot them at night, according to MSN.com. But this is only one of the reasons this two-lane highway without shoulders made the list. Indeed, Maine's rural roads have the highest fatality rate in the nation, MSN.com reports. Colorado's two-lane Highway 550, also known as the Million Dollar Highway, made the list because of the volume of traffic it sees, the severe winter weather drivers encounter, and the lack of shoulders or guardrails despite the fact that there are pronounced increases and decreases in elevation.
