摘要

The current science fiction series Battlestar Ga-lactica features a long-running war between humans and machines. However, a strong subtext suggests that there is something much fuzzier than a bright line dividing the two sides. The machines become gradually more human while the humans grow more dependent on technology; thus both sides grasp that there is a balance between the automated and the individualistic. This theme is not limited to fiction. Contemporary inventor and author Raymond Kurzweil has as much to say about it as does writer Philip K. Dick. And in Digital Apollo, David Mindell, Ph.D., the Frances and David Dibner Professor of the History of Engineering and Manufacturing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has his say about the interplay between man and machine.
