In the first chapter of Digital Apollo: Human and Machine in Space/light, David A. Mindell admits that an immense amount of material that has been written about the Apollo program and asks rhetorically what could be added to that body of work. As his book demonstrates, the answer is that there was room for at least one more path-breaking monograph. Digital Apollo tells an important story about interaction between astronaut and computer in this technologically successful program, and at the same time it suggests important questions about the future of the American space program. Clearly written and exhaustively researched, Digital Apollo is a noteworthy contribution to the history of astronautics and aeronautics and, for that matter, to the general history of technology.
