State Highway 145 in Colorado is the primary two-lane route linking Telluride with its bedroom communities. The highway follows the general path of the San Miguel River, which is deeply incised into the earth, creating steep canyons. The existing roadway climbs from west to east up Keystone Hill. The total elevation increase is approximately 285 ft (86.8 m) over the course of just 1 mi (1.6 km). In 2003 the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) began planning to widen a 3,500 ft (5,631.5 m) long section of the highway from two lanes to three, providing two lanes traveling upward and one down. Yeh and Associates, Inc., based in Denver, carried out geological and geotechnical investigations, evaluated slope stability, and designed retaining walls and micropile foundations for the CDOT on this project.
