My comments are prompted by two letters to the editor and a report— in Policy Briefing-on House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearings on bridge safety, all of which were published in the October issue. William M. Hayden, Jr., Ph.D., p.e., f.asce, urges engineers in his letter "to tell the truth" about the deficiencies and precarious conditions of some bridges while recognizing that this may be perilous to individuals reporting such facts to the public. The letter by Paul Cella, p.e., f.asce, points out that engineers advocating intensified checking may be suspected of trying to increase the amount of work available to them.
