Nearly a century before the delegates of the 13 American colonies converged in Philadelphia to sign a declaration of independence from Great Britain, the colony of Pennsylvania was prophetically deemed "the seed of a nation" by its founder, William Penn. The city plan of Philadelphia, including its picturesque central business districts and contiguous residential areas laid out on an evenly spaced grid, was among the first on the continent to be formally designed and was to provide the inspiration for many others. Founded on the tenets of religious and individual freedom, the city is universally recognized as a symbol of independence as well as a revolutionary achievement in city planning.
