The architects and engineers who designed the future headquarters of the U.S. Institute of Peace, in Washington, D.C., knew from the beginning that the building would be required to fill a variety of roles. After all, it would be at once an office building, a conference center, a research institution, and a public education center. Because the building would be located on the northwest corner of the National Mall, surrounded by some of the most revered icons of American democracy, they also knew it would have to do much more than perform a variety of functions. Somehow, it would have to symbolize peace.
