Janelia Farm—the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's new research facility near Leesburg, Virginia, is anything but obtrusive. The New York City-based architect Rafael Vinoly designed the building, and the Thornton-Tomasetti Group, also of New York City, engineered it to fit snugly into a grassy hillside. The building's serpentine shape, terraced floors, and grass-covered roof combine to form an architecturally and structurally innovative building that complements the surrounding landscape.
