When the Huey P. Long Bridge was completed, in 1935, its roadway lanes were considered adequate for the automobiles of that era.Today, however, motorists crossing the bridge for the first time are likely to cringe as they encounter lane widths of 9 ft (2.7 m), that is, 2 ft (0.6 m) narrower than a typical urban highway lane. Fortunately, relief is on the way—in the form of a widening project that will add two outer trusses and integrate them with the existing through trusses. The bridge, which crosses the Mississippi near New Orleans, is one of the few remaining major bridges in the United States that carry both freight rail and highway traffic. It crosses the river at a height of 135 ft (41 m) with a main span of 790 ft (241 m) and two secondary spans of 529 ft (161 m). A pair of rail tracks passes between its two existing trusses, and a roadway cantilevers on each side. At 18 ft (5.5 m) wide, each roadway is just wide enough for two narrow lanes without shoulders. Today approximately 58,000 vehicles per day use the highway portion of the bridge, which is a frequent bottleneck on U.S. Route 90.
