Four years ago Robert Punkenhofer, an art curator in the historic city of Graz, Austria, envisioned a new age bridge crossing the Mur River in the center of town. He pitched the idea to his fellow citizens as an amalgam of form and function―meeting hall, cafe, and utilitarian link between one side of the waterway and the other. After countless design iterations and a transatlantic collaboration between architects and engineers, the conceptualization has been realized as The Island in the Mur, a massive curvilinear steel structure floating atop the river. Designed by the Acconci Studio in New York City, the island consists of a bowl and a dome that come together seamlessly and rest on a steel pontoon anchored upstream by a single cable. Steel ramps leading to the island from both river-banks give way to walkways that course through the structure. The bowl is lined with transparent bleachers that descend to a stage and public gathering space; the dome encloses a cafe. The transition area between the two spaces, modeled after the curve of a seashell, is a playground.
