Work has begun on the Advanced Measurement Laboratory, a $218-million project that as part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will house some of the world's most technologically precise research labs. The 47,500 m~2 facility will be located at NIST's campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and will be designed so that such factors as temperature and vibration, which can affect sensitive experiments, can be strictly controlled. The project is expected to be completed by 2004.
