Engineers and architects nationwide received a letter a few weeks after September 11 urging them to guard critical design plans more carefully than they have in the past. Sent to approximately 300,000 e-mail addresses in early October by the General Services Administration (GSA), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the National Society of Professional Engineers, the letter warned that "a number of firms from the design and engineering community have contacted us to report recent or past requests for building plans, [which] in light of the attacks of September 11,2001, appear unusual due to the structures identified in the requests or the type of information solicited."
