Vacuum sewers were once considered viable only for small communities where topography or high groundwater precluded using gravity systems. However, the En-glewood Water District (EWD), in southwest Florida, chose to install vacuum sewers to upgrade its system because they are economical, reliable and easy to install. When the project is complete, it will be one of the largest of its kind in the world.
