We need action to tackle our waste problem and we need it now. On August 1 this year, in just seven months, we had used up a year's worth of the planet's resources. Earth Overshoot Day comes earlier with each passing year and 2018 was no exception, coming two days earlier than in 2017. Despite increasing awareness of the issue, we continue to use resources at an ever-increasing pace and then waste them. And we waste a lot. In the UK we create more than 200m tonnes of waste a year and households account for more than 27m tonnes of that, not helped by the fact that we throw away 25 percent of all the food and drink bought for consumption. These facts are just some of the reasons why Keep Britain Tidy has launched its latest action plan "Breaking Bad Habits: Moving Towards a Zero-Waste Society".
