With the world population set to grow to over 9bn inhabitants by 2030, we have an increasingly difficult challenge of how we can best manage our resources. With organisations targeting "zero to landfill" objectives and a heavy focus on achieving a circular economy, waste management has been brought to the forefront of everyone's attention. Over recent years, there has been a growing sector within the waste industry for new digital technologies. Frost & Sullivan's recent market analysis, "The Impact of Digital Transformation on the Waste Recycling Industry", reports that the development of digital solutions within the global smart waste management industry is expected to reach a revenue of $3.6bn by 2020 globally. Here are five technologies where companies have identified opportunities and gaps in the market place.
