In case you we're wondering, we're talking "plastic" here. Once heralded as a new man-made wonder that would replace natural materials in everything from clothes (well "plastic macs", anyway) and household utensils to cars and furniture, we're only belatedly seeing the Frankenstein flipside of what was thought to be clever in the 1950s and 60s. Today? It's quite clear that unless dramatic practical steps are taken, our environment could drown under a tide of waste plastic.
