In February, Defra announced that hazardous wastes, such as air pollution control (APC) residues, would be allowed to continue going to landfill despite exceeding the waste acceptance criteria laid down by the EU Landfill Directive. It is a truism that the development of the UK waste and resource management industry-has been driven largely by regulation. This is likely to continue to be the case even after the UK leaves the EU, which has long provided the lion's share of the regulation in question.
