Next month the UK will hold the referendum on its membership of the European Union (EU), one of the most important votes of our time. External pressure from the EU, through a range of directives, has led to a completely new approach for our sector. We have enjoyed a period when the UK Government has been committed to meeting targets and the industry has been committed to investing in new services and infrastructure. Seventeen years on from the Landfill Directive's introduction, the processing of waste to extract resources, as products or energy, is now the norm with huge increases in household recycling and landfill diversion.
