Food is a vital part of the event experience (anyone working in the industry will have to receive those feedback forms where attendees focus on the type and amount of food, rather than the quality of the event content}. But right now you can't have food at an event without food waste, and this is an increasingly emotive topic. There are no clear solutions but it's a challenge we need to be in action on. Why? In the UK alone consumers throw away about 4m tonnes of household food and drink annually - that's the equivalent of six meals every week for the average UK household. I don't think any research has been done on the global event industry's food waste footprint yet, but based on the fact that it's unusual to attend an event and experience food running out, I think it's safe to assert that the event industry significantly contributes to the global challenge of food waste.
