With over 44,000 certificates issued in the UK and over 300,000 issued globally, ISO 14001:2004 is the world's most widely recognised Environmental Management System (EMS) standard.1 It has been used in many industrial sectors, including waste and resource management, to demonstrate effective environmental protection and compliance management. Now, after over three years of intensive international input, the current version is due to be retired and the revised version entered its final approval stage, with the publication of a Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) in July. The final new version is expected to be published later this month, with an official launch on 6 October.
