The celebrated 19th century French essayist, Joseph Joubert, said: "It is better to debate a question without settling it, than to settle a question without debating it". Promoting debate was one of the main purposes behind SITA UK's recently published Mind the Gap report, which assesses the future requirements for residual treatment capacity in the UK. And since its release, we have been very happy with the number of conversations that it has prompted. There were two key factors behind the report. The first arose through the discussions we had with AEA in 2013 when it met with SITA UK and was given an insight into the type of data we hold and how we use it to assist in our modelling of the waste market. Historically, a range of associations and consultancies have produced reports and published their views and various policy makers had made their own contributions. At SITA UK we value each contribution, whether we agree with it or not, but we identified that there was a glaring gap - the view from industry. Forecasts and predictions of this type are essential because, as an industry, we are investing billions of pounds in all types of new infrastructure.
