As local authorities will no doubt be aware, the separate collection requirements of the Waste (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2012 come into force from 1 January 2015. The separate collection of four target recyclables (paper, metal, plastic and glass) will be mandatory wherever it is necessary to achieve high quality recyclables, and where it is "technically, environmentally and economically practicable" (TEEP) to do so. The Waste Regulation Route Map, recently released by WRAP, aims to assist local authorities in assessing whether their collection systems are compliant with the revised Waste Framework Directive (rWFD). The Route Map provides clear direction for undertaking such assessments from basic principles, and is a welcome addition to the situation.
