Serco claims to be the first major waste management contractor to specify "Cyclear" cyclist-aware safety technology to all its LGVs operating in London. Cyclear, from ISS, is designed to warn cyclists when a vehicle is about to turn left by a flashing LED warning panel, which is triggered when the driver selects the left turn trafficator. This is backed-up by an audible warning, which not only alerts cyclists, but other vulnerable road users and pedestrians in busy urban streets. Out of all cycling fatalities in the UK, 20 percent are likely to involve a truck or bus and out of that total, 50 percent of those fatalities take place in London. Serco had previously piloted the Cyclear system on its contract in the London Borough of Wandsworth and, based on driver feedback, will now install an improved version on the new RCVs and recyclers used on its Havering contract, which starts this autumn.
