Speaking at the Zero Waste Europe Conference in Brussels, Potocnik said that the first step to a zero waste Europe could be concentrating on reducing plastic waste to landfill. The Commissioner said that our waste over the last decade has increased in the proportion of plastic waste produced. Europe is still generating increasing quantities of plastic waste, he said, and we have to deal with the waste itself as well as the plastic that escapes from waste streams. He said: "Perhaps our first step towards zero waste should be zero plastic waste to the environment."
