In 1994, the small municipality of Bellusco in Lombardy became the first in Italy to introduce a separate collection for food waste. Today, this method of collection is adopted by more than 2 000 municipalities in Italy and hundreds more across the world, including the UK. This system, however, is not just a highly efficient way to divert food waste from landfill, it is also proving to have a pivotal role in the development of a new economic model where agriculture, chemistry and waste management are integrated, bringing significant environmental and economic benefits to the region.
