It was great to learn that one of the world's most popular restaurants is taking into account the impact it could have by implementing waste and resource efficiency initiatives, and its proud of it - quite rightly so. "At McDonald's UK we are proud to be the first quick service restaurant chain to commit to energy from waste as one solution to reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill. Our ultimate goal is to send zero waste to landfill and an energy from waste pilot in Sheffield in 2007, involving 11 restaurants, demonstrated that EfW is one viable way to reduce carbon emissions," explained McDonald's UK's environment spokesperson, Katie Saunders. The scheme continues to run today - with all waste being converted into energy to heat local buildings - including Sheffield City Hall and Weston Park hospital."
