At the age of 19 Deborah Meaden set up her first business, importing glass and ceramics from Italy into top UK stores, so setting the tone for a career as an entrepreneur which saw her operate in the retail and leisure sectors, and it was there she took up a role in the family amusement arcade business, working her way up from the shop floor to become operations director, before moving to the holiday park side of the business, the well-known Weststar. Within two years she had been promoted to managing director, growing the business from one to five parks, before completing a management buy-out in 1999. After six years in charge, she sold the company in a £33m deal, retaining a 23 percent stake and an active role in the business, before selling her remaining stake when Weststar was sold on again for £83 m.
