More than £889m worth of food is wasted by consumers in Scotland each year. That's an average of £410 per household. If food was not wasted, households could prevent the equivalent of 1.6m tonnes of carbon dioxide each year in Scotland. This is the same as taking one in every four cars off the road. Around 587000 tonnes of food waste is thrown out by Scottish households each year. In wales 330000 tonnes of food is thrown away each year. Around £500m is spent on food that could have been eaten. That's £420 per family per year.
