Last year, in April 2005's issue of Wastes Management, I reported how Cyprus was dealing with solid waste management collection and disposal, and the changes that were required to meet the necessary EU legislation (Falling Into Line with EU Law, pictured below right). One year on and genuine progress towards Cyprus's Strategic Solid Waste Management Plan is visible. In order to comply with EU legislation the old open tips and the practice of open burning (such as that reported at Kritou Tera and Ayia Marinouda) are being progressively replaced with regional waste transfer sites and fully compliant sanitary landfill.
