When it opened in May 1873, the Midland Railway Hotel at St Pancras in London displayed the typical ruddy, robust characteristics we now associate with Victorian architecture. Designed by George Gilbert Scott, it owed its appearance to six million bricks and 9,000 tonnes of iron, standing in front of a glass and iron arch curving a record-breaking 243 feet over the station concourse. No less than 6,000 men, 1,000 horses and 100 steam cranes toiled for six years to complete this contemporary marvel. Today the station and its Grade 1 listed facade is once again the hub of transport master planning as developers seek to connect it to the channel tunnel railway via Stratford by 2007. This will involve unloading huge amounts of concrete and metal, disposing of hundreds of tonnes of tunnel piling and excavation spoil, delicate brick restoration and the creation of a nimble waste and materials cycle in a congested zone.
