Waste brokers are pariahs in the industry that play one carrier off against another purely to get a lower price, claim some carriers. David Headon is sanguine in the face of this charge. Yes, some brokers may well be doing this but then so are most of the customers of waste collection and disposal companies. "A waste broker service is essentially an outsourced waste management operation for clients, undertaken according to specific terms to suit the client," he says. Headon's company, Waste Cost Reduction Services (WCRS) offers its clients a service that reduces costs through waste minimisation or better management of waste materials, an improved image as a company seen to be achieving waste reduction goals, and the security of regulatory compliance. And with more legislation driving waste producers this latter service is increasingly important for large companies with brands that can ill afford to be tarnished by press reports of prosecution for poor waste management practices.
