Recent interest in recycling to land inevitably highlights a series of conflicts between strategists in government (which seeks to avoid perceptions of error), industry (which looks for low-cost global solutions), regulators (who look for enforceable 'rules', which ensure hassle-free environmental protection) and technologists (who search for understandable and sustainable technical solutions). There are probably over 100 million tonnes per annum of wastes that are currently collected in the UK and which could go to land. The market for retail composts is probably less than one million tonnes per annum and will probably never, in the foreseeable future, be over three million tonnes per annum in the UK. Therefore, the practical solution for low value/high volume wastes is to put them back where they came from - the land. The questions are about how, and with what standards?
