The Recycling Fund was established by Wrap to address the gap between the availability of investment capital and the demands of the small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) in the UK's recycling sector, otherwise referred to as the "equity gap". With an initial £5.5m fund, it provides equity into relatively early stage businesses. Ian Simm, managing director of Impax, explained that businesses can have two types of funding: equity and debt. Equity has a greater risk and is aimed at "growth businesses", whereas debt (the equivalent of your own mortgage) is for safer, more predictable projects. "Many recycling entrepreneurs are running growth businesses," he explained, "as the sector still has a lot of room to expand.
