摘要

Birmingham's revived Bullring centre, re-opened in 2003 along with a shiny new Self ridges store, is living proof that shopping centres, much derided as 1970s monuments of tackiness, will prosper well into the 21 st century. The developer, Birmingham Alliance, describes it as "Europe's largest retail-led regeneration project... providing 110,000 sqm of new retail accommodation over three trading levels," and boasts 146 shops, 3,100 new car parking spaces and enough concrete to stretch between Birmingham and Scotland ten times. Though large, it's just one of the 750 or so shopping centres in the UK, not to mention flagship stores on major high streets such as London's Oxford Street, some of which are struggling to deal with an increasingly complex challenge: how to reduce waste created "by both shoppers and retailers and cut down the hundreds ofincoming and outgoing delivery journeys while keeping costs down. "Everyone focuses on the second half of the operation - taking waste from the collection point," remarked Vicky Kemp, Director of Retail CSR consultancy Equilibria Group, who has been working closely with Selfridges to improve its environmental management.
