In post as Head of Waste Regulation since July this year - 16th July to be exact (a key day for Landfill Directive progress) - Liz Parkes is very enthusiastic about the multitude of tasks that face her. And optimistic too: her previous post as Waste Regulation Policy Manager was about "setting the agenda for the future of waste regulation," as she puts it, making her ideally placed to take forward waste regulation strategy across the board. She is interested in the whole framework of waste regulation: "Not just regulating sites, but the effect that the implications of the Landfill Directive will have on patterns of waste disposal, and what's happening on imports and exports of waste and producer responsibilities". She has seen waste awareness rise across her career, but is acutely conscious that most news coverage on waste is negative: "What we need to do is to turn people's perception of waste away from something that's negative into something that's positive," she stresses.
