On 19th September, as the new academic year began, a number of keen distance learning students met at University College Northampton (UCN) for a residential school, which ran from Friday to Sunday. The students came from a variety of backgrounds and companies, but they had in common a desire to gain a formal qualification in wastes management. The students had chosen from a range of distance learning courses in wastes management, including BSc and HNC courses. The basis for study is learning packs, which contain essential study material covering all learning outcomes. Students are also expected to undertake extensive self-directed learning. The courses are assessed by tutor-marked written assignments and time-constrained assignments.
