Kate McCulloch caught up with Alan Woods, Chief Executive of ENCAMS, who discussed his vision of how to achieve a cleaner and safer environment. Alan Woods became Chief Executive of ENCAMS on 1st April 2000, a date that makes him chuckle, for obvious reasons. "April fool's day is the day that this fool took over as the chief exec," he says. But, his enthusiasm for what he does makes it clear that he does not feel a fool for taking up the post. Prior to that, he had joined the organisation in 1994, as Director of Operations in London, and then moved to Wigan to be a director in their Central Services Department. His background is perhaps a departure from the norm - as he has had what he describes as three distinct careers. When he left school he trained to be an accountant, which he found to be dull. Consequently, he went travelling in the States and returned to the UK to become a paramedic. He worked as a paramedic from 1985 to 1990 when, as a shop steward, he became embroiled in the ambulance dispute. "I wasn't very happy with the outcome," he recalls.
