Progress is being made towards the adoption of the proposal for a Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and its associated proposal for a Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The proposals have been published in the Official Journal of the European Communities ((COM(2000)347), OJ C365, 19/12/2000). Electrical/electronic equipment is the third waste stream to be subject to EU "producer responsibility" legislation, following packaging waste and end-of-life vehicles.
