摘要

Since the early 1970s, packaging has been in the environmental limelight and companies in the packaging chain are arguably more aware of, and responsive to, environmental concerns than companies in many other areas. At present the European Commission plans to propose a revision to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (94/62/EC) in early 2001. It is timely, therefore, to assess the costs and benefits of the current situation, clarify the goals and ensure that future policy will be environmentally sound, economically efficient and socially acceptable.
