Microorganisms found in MRFs are sourced from organic residues and contaminants (food and drink residues) within the materials received. Damp organic material and wet porous surfaces promote microbial growth and the Danish Working Environment Service (DWES) have long since recognised this as potential health issue in MRFs: The exposure to MRF operatives to these microorganisms is mainly through the inhalation of bioaerosols - airborne microbes such as different species of bacteria and fungi, as well as a variety of cellular components.
