Once again waste management has made the national headlines, this time it is landfill that is on the receiving end of emotive commentary and criticism, as the general public is warned of possible health risks from living within 2km of a landfill site (whether it is operational or not). The Small Area Health Statistics Unit was commissioned by the Department of Health to carry out an extensive study in response to public concerns and have produced a report that claims there is a small excess risk of congenital anomalies and low birth weight in populations living near landfill sites.
