Are you suffering from 'solastalgia'? If not, perhaps you aren't part of the Gen(eration) Z demographic, born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s. Solastalgia might sound like just another buzzword, but it is useful in understanding how young people -the future of the waste management and resources sector - relate to the circular economy. But before contemplating how solastalgia might impact the future, what exactly does it mean? The term was coined in 2005 by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht and it describes a state of emotional distress caused by environmental change. There are other phrases for this too, including 'eco-grief 'or simply 'climate anxiety'. Whichever terminology is used to describe it, concern over the environment is something increasingly associated with the interests and behaviours of today's young people globally, to an extent not seen previously.
