Roll back to 2008, and I'd just graduated with a geography degree from Bristol University. I had no grand career plan, but a general desire to work in the environmental sector and 'make a difference'. I landed my first role as a waste liaison officer at Portsmouth City Council. I focused on running communications campaigns in the city to encourage residents to use recycling services. It was a great introduction to the sector. I worked with a fantastic team and developed a lot of skills I've gone on to develop further over my career to date. But, most importantly, having seen the amount of waste produced in the city, and the bearing that national and local policies had on the way it was managed, accompanied by the impact of individual actions, I found a real desire and passion for working in the resources and waste sector. Waste is universal. It's something that everyone creates, something that's tangible and, therefore, something that everyone can connect to.
