摘要

As the old saying goes, good intentions don't always lead where we imagined. While the UK government's target to ban new sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 points the way to a lower carbon electric vehicle (EV) future, another major environmental question is set to become increasingly important as a result: what do we do about EV battery recycling? Currently, the number of EV batteries coming to the end of their roadworthy lives is low; however, the Faraday Institution's ReLiB project estimates that, by 2028, around 16,500 tonnes will need to be processed, with this figure continuing to rise. The project's aim is to: 'understand the conditions required to ensure the sustainable management of lithium-ion batteries when they reach the end of their useful life in Evs'; enhance the overall supply chain; and 'ensure the UK has the facilities required for safe, economic and environmentally sound management of the materials contained in lithium-ion batteries.' It has identified the environmental challenges associated with the transition to Evs, and the need to create a battery recycling system that ensures we don't end up with another environmental headache down the line.
